hello my name is...and you are?

its the weekend. so glad for it.

a few of you have been with me since my very first post. since that post a lot has changed. a lot. i wanted to take a moment to let some of my new friends know who i am and perhaps get to know some of you as well.

my name is rashon  (ruh-shun). my family calls me 'shon and my auntie calls me shonnie. which is a combination of my first name ronnie and my middle name rashon. i have a 3 year old silky terrier who is my best friend. i currently live in rock hill, sc. i have been here since i started college in 2002. while the city is nice i am ready for something that sharpens my skills and social prowess.

i am blessed to have both parent who have been married for almost 3o years. i have a sister, a brothe,r two nieces and a nephew. i love all of them dearly and they know it.

i had the worst and the best childhood. i dont like sad sob stories, just know from birth GOD  had his hands on me and his grace has kept me.

i have been singing since i could remember and started directing the choir at a very early age. i do wish i had stayed more into the music scene, but im grateful for where i am.

so this blog is really a combination for my love of thrift store shopping and fashion. if you read many of the previous posts you will see quite a few posts about my wardrobe. how i got into interior design is not really a long story, but a story none-the-less.

lori (she is sooo beautiful!!) sent me an email one february day saying she liked my bedroom and would i be interested in appearing on stage in new york to talk to nate berkus about it. you can check out that video here.

from that first visit, nate really pushed me into exploring the world of interior design. i had never really done it before, but he challenged me in such a way that i am so thankful he did. so with my love of shopping at thrift stores i started channeling my attention to furniture pieces as a means of inspiring all of you to thrift and score a deal as well as save some money.

since that time i have made several tv appearances, spoken about my blog for several groups and have been enjoying the ride.

i am able to do all of this free and clear because my job downsized in 2010 and decided they no longer needed me.

dont let me fool you into thinking i am wealthy by any means. no. since i am by myself i don't have the luxury of a second income that comes along with a spouse. nope. its just me, a laptop and a few fabric swatches. although there are stressful days i never talk about, i am so blessed to be able to inspire so many with my talent.

i am not the biggest, but i try to do my best.

well that is a little about me. id like to know about you. tell me your name. where you are from and few snippets about your life. no need to plug your blog in the comments. there will be an opportunity for that very soon. i just want to know a little bit about you.

anyone?

Hi Rashon!
I'm Loui♥..a beachy girl from Florida living in the Mile High City of Denver Colorado!
I've been here for 6 years..
absolutely love the city for it's myriad photo opportunities..
You see, I am an avid amateur photographer!
The seasons of the year are much more pronounced here..and last much longer. haven't chosen a favorite because each is so unique with such a variety of floral offerings..I adore tulips, roses, peonies..who couldn't be thrilled living in a place so green and scented with lilacs? Ahhh! the homes..more like castles..each so different!
I can honestly say my favorite wildflower here is the state flower.. the Columbine! Aspen trees also hold a special place in my photographers heart!
Also have shopped thrift stores for eons...long before thrifting became so hip!! the love of the hunt..the thrill of discovery..I just love thrifting!
Goodwill is my #1 choice! have made many purchases there..in fact..I have not set foot into a mall in 4 years!! no need to..
Whenever my hubs can't reach me, my cell phone will ring..he will then ask the question..
" where are you? Goodwill or the grocery store.. or City Floral with your Nikon?" he knows me so well!
that's just a wee bit about me..
so pleased to have met you..hope to make it a reality soon!
warmest hugs..
Loui♥

I am a new reader, so it's great to learn a little more about who you are and your background. I'm really loving your style and am very inspired by the great stuff you find thrifting.

My name is Jenn; I live in NYC but am originally from Texas. I work as a psychotherapist, and have always had a passion for writing as well. I love cooking, baking, photography, traveling, and exploring my city.

I used to be embarrassed when my mom dragged me to the thrift store as a kid (I wanted to shop at the mall!), but now I can appreciate that I was raised by a woman who was simply ahead of the times:)

I recently discovered you and have been impressed by your eye for design, especially on a budget. I always enjoyed the thrill of the hunt thrifting and have found some great things, although I don't have a lot of time to devote to it now.

I think you will go far with the design sense you have!

Hello...I first saw you on Nate's program and loved what you did with the thrift store finds...knowing I'll look at things differently now, so Thanks!!
Especially like the end tables painted blue & used together as a coffee table :)

Wishing I had a particular talent to share, but I want to learn to play a madolin. Looking forward to more good things from you.

Good Morning Rashon,
My name is Diane and I currently live in Maryland and have been here since my Navy husband retired in 2003. I work as an administrator for a large medical practice in Annapolis. Even though I love my job, I must admit I am a frustrated want to be interior designer. :) Bob, my husband has always encouraged me and reminds all the time I should pursue my passion. :) I love the Nate show and I also love what you bring to us. You have a great talent and I am so grateful you are here to inspire all of us. Well...maybe one day I will follow through and work in interior design and meet you. I have always loved a good bargain like you and always looking for my next piece to refinish. Again thank you for your blog and sharing your talent. Love that you shared who you are with all of us and looking forward to hearing all about my blog friends. A great weekend to all!!! xoxoxo

I have a thrift addiction and will admit that probably 75% of everything we have in our home is thrifted besides major furniture and underwear. I have been an addict since before it became so popular.I felt like it was my own special secret in the seventies.

I love reading your posts on Facebook and here. You create magic within spaces.

Thank you for allowimg me to peek into your world.

Gday. I am Charis (Car riss) and from a coastal town in western australia. I am big on blog reading, rather than reading magazines. I repurpose furniture where I can and only by things on sale or at least half price. Have come up with some great pieces. Hubs and I have just built our very own first home, so we are starting small with decorating and your blog is an inspiration!!

I'm Jeannie Marie and last summer my husband of 43 years and unexpectedly had to retire and we moved from the Midwest to Sultry Florida. For two months we sold two thirds of our household in order to fit into a small cottage. It was horrible to let so much go, but a wonderful opportunity to start over with only the best and the favorites. A huge unburdening. Seven months later we are still happy with the decision. Now we are in a "foreign land" and we want to learn to landscape with natural plants and decorate our coastal cottage on a very limited income. I'm happy to meet you!

Hi Rashon! My name is Dorothy and I live in New Orleans but am originally from Los Angeles. I'm glad you posted this, it seems like it's for my own benefit lol. I just started reading a few months ago via Young House Love, when they posted about an Atlanta conference they and you will both be speaking at (and I think I may be attending!) I really love your view on thrifting and your love of vintage. It's something I fell in love with back in middle school and as I get older and am more interested in home and furnishings, not just clothes, I find your blog to be an inspiration and a guide. Keep it up!

Hi, loved hearing about you.. you do a great job..bet you were a great choir director.
I am a 65 year old grandmother, widowed early in life after 25 yrs of marriage. I love to take things and make them into other things.. mostly in the sewing category. For 40+years, I have been recycling while making costumes for the theatre. I love working with the young kids in theatre sparking their interest. The joke is give me a shower curtain, I will make you a ballroom gown. I have 6 grandkids that I sew for.. anything goes, if it is material, I will reuse it for the better. My only problem is I can't say NO.. and end up with lots of projects .. but that's my life now..jumping from project to project, reusing , recycling as I go. Keep up the great work.. love watching what you will be doing next

Hi There! My name is Megan Pesce. I am a stay at home Mom in Acton, MA with two little guys who are 7 & 4. I started pursuing my interior design passion in 2008 (I've done it for friends for years for free!) I started a program at the Boston Architectural College for residential interiors. I haven't completed the program...but my business has taken off! I created a 2 hour design consultation called The DO-Ovah which helps people get started with interior design, (EVERYONE seems to watch design shows...but don't know where to start) and I also do parties! I was so inspired after "meeting you" on Nate that I've been thrifting for a few months now. (Just scored some beautiful green glass plates for St Patricks day party I'm doing! Anyhoo...I'm a huge fan...keep inspiring!

Aw I love this! Great great idea.

Hello, my name is Bethany. I am in the technology field by day and a decorator in spirit. I am following in my mom's footsteps (she's actually is a decorator :)) and we just started this venture together (blog and decor services). I am learning to hone my eye and deal with clients, all of which are enlightening to say the least.

I have a fiery personality. I try to balance it with the need to be a good person and do right by others. Sometimes though, I push away the people that mean the most to me. As I get older, I am more tame. But I don't like to be 'caged'. I think honesty is the most important quality in a person and having love in your life (be it for yourself, your spouse, your family or your animals, whatever you so choose) is a cure-all pill. I like to make the world pretty, but I also have a tint of moodiness to my interiors. I think that probably tells alot about who I am.

I think animals are often times nicer than people. But I still love people. I have horses and a dog and they make my hubby and my world go round. The silent partnership you get from animal companionship has been the biggest 'teacher' to me on how to act and react. I think I have learned more from my relationship with my horse than with most people. Above all, treat others nicely. Do good. Show respect. If not, you'll get tossed on the ground.

This has been cathartic. Thanks for letting me share. Kinda like an AA meeting minus the addictions (well… I supposed we are all addicted to decorating).

Thank you for sharing, too. It's so nice to dive deeper into who someone is.

Hi Rashon! My name is Denise and I am truly a fan of your blog. Your interior design is inspiring due to the elegance you are able to achieve through thrifting. Since moving to Southwestern Virginia 2 years ago, I regularly thrift at 3 Goodwill stores, Salvation Army and Rescue Mission thrift stores. Each one has something unique to offer. My first inspiration was my Mom, who kept my Dad very busy with carpeting, lighting fixtures, painting and routine home improvements. I also love Kim Myles style because her transformations are so achievable. I refer to your blog daily to read your updates in addition to the blog roll on the sidebar.

I love the correlation of design, diy and personal fashion style. Thanks for the daily treat and keep up the good work.

Hi Rashon, I loved reading your story and getting to know you a little better! I am Brooke, born and raised in Florida and now living (since 6 months ago) in Minneapolis, Minnesota...the weather has been a little bit of an adjustment! My family and I are here because my husband started law school up here. He and I have 3 kids- a 6 year old and 1 year old twins. I have loved interior design since long before I knew what that phrase meant. As a kid I spent all of my allowance at yard sales on rugs, plastic flowers, vases, etc to decorate our house with. I've gone to bed at night dreaming about how I would decorate my dream house for almost as long as I can remember. Decorating makes me HAPPY. :)

I started reading your blog when another blog I read linked to you and you'd posted a photo of a plaid tartan weekend bag. I sort of have an obsession with weekend bags, although I only go away for the weekend once a year at best (each time, with a different bag, natch). I was disheartened to see the bag was on back order but was more than pleased to find a blog written by a person who loves thrifting, as I do. My mom taught me.

My name is Dawn, I'm from Jersey (mostly), and I love design. And my inconsistently updated blog has about two readers so a plug would just be embarrassing for us both.

They never believe me when I tell them.

It was not until we lived in NC for three years that I discovered Good Will, Salvation Army and thrifting in general. I love turning something old and beat up into something beautiful. I love that it barely cost me anything and I am not contributing to the landfills. Even my 17 year old daughter loves thrifting with me. She is all about Good Will clothes and that girl has style.
That is pretty much it.

My name is Ginger and I am a new stay at home to my almost 8 month old son. Shortly after I had my son I saw you on the Nate Show...and that's how I ended up here. I came over here to see some of your room transformations but have continued checking in because I like your clothes! I showed some of your outfits to my husband and now I've used your outfits to help build some new ones for him too. Love the blog - keep it up!

Hi Rashon. I'm Lisa. I'm a SAHM in Michigan. Prior to becoming mommy to the cutest kids in THE WHOLE WORLD (1 adopted from Guatemala, 1 biological/caucasian, 1 adopted from Korea) I was a graphic designer. Why did I go into that field, I wonder. My passion has always been interiors.

I love thrift. I love bargains. I love looking like I spent a lot, when I spent nearly nothing (that goes for clothes and home!). Easy to see why I love you and your blog! :)

Hello there...I call myself "the misfit" on teh interwebz because I have a "normal" job and I appreciate not being google-able with all of my outside interests. (Not that trying to spiff up my house is anything to be ashamed of!) You've got to be one of my favorite bloggers; you have a great "voice" and anyone who reminds people that you don't have to spend a fortune AND that you should always look your best (it seems our generation has lost the art of going out in public showing some sense of occasion and some self-respect) is a double winner in my book.

So while I find your very existence to be an unvarying source of inspiration and your posts never fail to make me smile, I have one tiny quibble: your phonetic spelling of your name isn't really phonetic. It doesn't tell us which syllable gets the emphasis, and I can't see how each of the vowels could really have an "uh" sound (unless it is really pronounced "Russian"?). I was thinking it would be pronounced "ruh-SHAWN" or maybe "ray-SHAWN" but maybe it's "ration" or "RAY-shun" or..."Russian."

I have some experience with this, as my first name is Polish and very much requires phonetic spelling for non-Polish audiences :).

@ the misfit

My parents gave me my name and gave me the correct pronunciation of it.

I do correct people when they pronounce it incorrectly, as it is NOT my name.

Regardless of any standard formation or rhetoric my name is Rashon and its pronounced "ruh-shun"

Thanks.

Hi, I've been reading your blog for quite some time and enjoying it always. I live in Norfolk, VA and we have several thrift stores here I need to start exploring. I'm inspired by your posts and once I save up a bit for all the projects I want to do, I am hoping to hire you to help me virtually re-do one or more rooms of my house. Take care - Raquel

You had me at hello. Since the 1st time I saw you on the Nate Show you captured my heart.

Hi, Rashon, my name is Kristy and I'm from Portland, OR, married with 2 beautiful beagles named Jake & Elwood (from the Blues Brothers Movie) that I love very much. I'm passionate about design, and believe in recycling, re-purposing and reusing. (Oh yeah, and that thrifting thing.) I also love fashion, but I don't talk about it as much as I do design. I look forward to your posts, and always make sure I tune in when you're on the Nate Show. You have a precious gift, and I can't wait to see what you do next. You inspire me.

Keep up the good work, and tell Nate thank you for sharing you with the rest of us.

Have a great day!
Kristy

PS I'm slightly jealous of some of your finds. Wish we had better pics in Oregon. :)

@ Mr Goodwill Hunting: I think it's safe to assume that @the_misfit is not currently living in the south. Two "uh" sounds sound perfectly normal to me. I could probably name several friends with at least one "uh" off the top of my head. Two will take a little longer with my old brain trudging along...
It's great to hear how people became who they are. Following life paths is always interesting...
My name is Ally and I currently live in Chicago. Originally from Georgia, I'm still not used to the harsh winters even after ten years. Time is flying by and I am still trying to figure out what I want to do when I grow up. I went to art school and feel like I need to do something creative. A regular desk job has slowly been killing me for almost 20 years. Good thing I was laid off! Now I have the time to find out what I love and start doing that ASAP...
I love repurposing objects and have often thought of doing something similar to you. Making a career out of shopping sounds too good to be true. Teaching people to reuse what we already have (or someone else had) would be ideal...
I first found you on Nate since my afternoons are pretty free. I always made sure I was around if you were scheduled. I hate that we won't be able to see you there any more. But I hope that means we can look forward to seeing you on somewhere else...
Thanks for inspiring us in so many different ways. Enjoy your success!

Hi Rashon! Nice to meet you on the blog and on the Nate show! I just found your blog tonight and it was a nice surprise. My name is Carol and I was born and raised in central Florida - I have lived in many other states but always seem to come "home". I have shopped thrift stores and consignments stores before they were "vogue" and when I found myself a divorced mother of two young girls I had to learn, not only had to decorate on a shoestring budget, but how to hang the ceiling fans and mow the grass and do the landscaping! I have meet the love of my life and he shares my love of decorating. Together we have remodeled and decorated five houses in the last twenty years, including the foreclosure we bought a little over a year ago. Would love to see you over at my little corner of the blog world!
Hugs - Carol@cdm-arewethereyet

Hi Rashon! I so enjoy watching you on Nates show...when I have been able to watch(Im usually at work) But I make more of an effort to watch when you say you are going to be on. I also follow your facebook page. You have a wondeful talent!!!
I work for my sons in construction,so I am blessed to be with my boys everyday. But trust me that has it's stresses too. It's tough taking instructions from someone you gave birth to, haha! But afterward I sew and I make felt toys. Not your typical felt toys,I make felt campfires. I emailed you a while back about advertising on your blog and I am now ready. So I will email you again today so we can make this happen!!

Hi Rashon,
My name is Lynn and I am a SAHM in Seattle. I found your blog through the Nester's site, and I really enjoy your vision. I have 3 children and my husband is a ship's engineer so he's gone half the time. My older daughter and I watched all your videos and we both loved them. One of my favorite things is to drop by thrift stores in the mornings after I drop off my kids at school. You have given me lots of inspiration. Thanks for all your hard work!
Lynn

Hi! I go by LaQuin... I'm from Birmingham, Alabama. This is my first time visiting your site and I got here from a link on Breaking Down The Big Beige Box... I thought the title of your blog was clever so I clicked and here I am. I work a real world job by day and spend my spare time creating any and everything!

My name is Kelly and I'm new to the party. I did spend the evening going over your older posts and I have to say I love your style! Just looking at it makes me happy. I live in Georgia and me and my husband love going to thrift stores, so much that we rarely buy anything new now. Selena Thrifty mentioned you in one of her videos and I'm happy to have looked your blog up. Keep on styling! :)
