[the reveal: CHIANG MAI BOWTIE]

so what's a guy to do when he has a small amount of an iconic fabric,
a love for classic fashion and interior design?
he combines them both and gets a Chiang Mai Bowtie made.

special thanks to brownbelle for making these bowties for me, at my personal specifications and for such great photography.

this bowtie is unconventional, but i am very pleased. so pleased that i will be wearing one of them  during my next segment with nate berkus on wednesday

and tomorrow night during a book signing in new york city with holly becker of the blog decor8.

i'd LOVE to hear each one of your THOUGHTS...

[before THE REVEAL...]

i wanted to give you perspective on my thinking process about the schumacher chiang mai fabric i blogged about here.

the fabric in and of itself is amazing. every inch is saturated with color.

after sending off my fabric i came across this image that really conveyed my thought process. it is the schumacher fabric broken down into smaller pieces. unless one knows what the chiang mai fabric is, they would not know this amazing stationary set derived from it.
[via
when you look at the above picture you can tell that various portions of the textile were carefully selected to highlight the plethora of patterns found in the fabric. as i type this i am almost inclined to say it is better in pieces, because you can appreciate all of the elements separately rather than everything getting lost in the whole.

yes. i am inclined to say it.

so on mon i will reveal exactly what i did with it.

UPDATE I've linked this post to Susan's Monday Metamorphosis Party

[well i did it...]

did what you ask?
i sold my dining chairs off craigslist  yesterday. surprisingly it wasn't a hard task. in less than an hour a lovely couple emailed me and picked them up. i kept putting off selling them, but knew i really wanted to get rid of them. it was something about them that were always off to me.
they served their purpose well. the've seen a many dinner parties and have supported the bums of many guests. but now i am off to find new ones.

what am i looking for?
i wont say just yet.
perhaps no dining table...but a pool table...
yea. that sounds about right..

so...what have you bought off craigslist lately?

[sneak peek: office space starting point]

as a lifestyle expert and a designer/decorator, i often receive emails regarding my design and lifestyle services which you can read about here. many clients simply need a [starting point].

jeff contacted me a few weeks ago and stated that he had a small room in which he wanted to turn into an office space. however he did NOT want it to feel like an typical office.

after sending jeff a custom questionnaire regarding his space and after a few email exchanges, i came up with this starting point.
as you can tell this room is quite basic in the color scheme, but what makes it appealing is the various patterns which gives the space interest. this is important in a small room, where high impact is desired. as you can see the suggestion is a very graphic wallpaper which will be balanced out by a cooler grey tone for the remaining walls. there are no windows in this space, so the wallpaper is the focal point.
i am proposing similar chairs to these. the first chair is certainly iconic of a "man space." and the worn caramel colored leather is quite perfect. for the the louis style chairs i am suggesting the wood part of the chairs be painted black or perhaps a deep ebony stain. i would also like to see the cane portion of the chair remain its natural color, which will add another visual layer of interest to the room and also tie into the buttery leather chair.

the desk?

well, he already has a very traditional desk that has been in storage for a while. we intend to bring that out and modify it a bit to fit the space.

what a great starting point.

what element do you like most about this inspiration board?

[society social and gDub...]

i feel somewhat like a bad blogger. really. i will tell you why.

a few days ago society social launched its manifeesto magalog. while flipping through the well-styled and beautifully captured images i went "hunting," to find out more. well as the joy bells were ringing, i found out that the owner roxy also known as the "bar cart lady," lived in charlotte, nc. she is also the voice behind the blog my cup of te. i felt bad because all this time ive tried to connect with so many local bloggers and she slipped right under my nose.
[roxy gave me a hard time with snapping a photo, lol, but here she is]
it could have been really bad because in just a few months she will be moving to new york. the great new york.

well after a few exchanges via twitter we managed to set a date to hear all about each others businesses, where we grew up and the like.
we met last week at press in uptown charlotte, a very low-key wine bar. her kind of place. after spending  a few hours at press, gDub was hongry. so we made our way to the kings kitchen also in uptown charlotte.
i have seen promotional fliers for this restaurant many times, but because i live in rock hill, i never had an opportunity to visit. the food was great. seeing that roxy and i are both lovers of soul food (southern cooking if you will), we felt right at home.
the design of the kings kitchen was simple and elegant and the atmosphere was so comforting.
maybe it was all of the stripes that caught my attention. albeit the light was not great for picture taking it was perfect for setting the mood.
there was a great jazz band playing when we arrived, but that joy was soon ended.
so i met a new friend this past weekend. very excited. make sure you visit roxy on her blog and if you need a bar cart and more treasures, but sure to drop by the society social website.

[im no food blogger, BUT...]

...i love food and i wanna talk about food on the blog. its been a while since i have blogged about food slash entertaining slash tablescapes, like i did here and here and here. the fact is, i am a creative individual and i love pretty much all areas of classic designs. whether it be entertaining, home design or fashion. i am a fan.

albeit i am not a food blogger, i enjoy reading various food blogs from time to time and commenting on them when i can.

for the past few years i have been sneaking off to harris teeter, buying a slice of ricotta cheesecake for dessert. like three times a week.
i am not big on sweets or the like. however, this one $3 slice of cake is exceptional and the exception. they also have it with whipped cream and cherries. i normally buy it plain and embellish it with my fruit of choice like these rasberries, that almost didn't make it onto the cheesecake.

speaking of cheesecake...

i went to the cheesecake factory and asked if they had anything similar. of course, the waiter's reply was, "ricotta cheese is used in like lasagna and stuff, not cheesecake." humph. a simple "no sir" wouldve sufficed.

have you ever tried ricotta cheesecake?
got a recipe for a good one?

[mixology monday: Astor & Black]

some time ago, i came across astor & black, a custom men's clothier company. if you know me by now, you know i enjoy being classically well dressed. between civic engagements and church functions suits are a staple in my wardrobe.
i contacted another clothing company sometime ago regarding getting fitted for suits and the representative missed his appointment and then emailed me an hour AFTER the appointment with an excuse. not good. such is NOT the case with astor and black and their charlotte representative david watkins. i knew watkins was a man of the cloth, because he arrived in a well tailored pinstriped suit.
bespoke garments are tailored to the exact body frame of the client in which it is intended. as you can tell this suit,  like a few others i own, fit perfectly. when david came to my house to talk with me and after i looked over his selection, i knew peaked lapels were in order. we both thought this navy blue was a great choice as it is very versatile.
custom garments are an investment. while you may not be able to afford every piece in your closet to be custom having a few pieces in your wardrobe is essential. it goes without saying, but i will say it anyway, custom clothiers allow you to chose fabrics and style of your garment. the above shirt was a custom one where i decided to turn the stripe fabric horizontally in order to give it additional interest. small change, but amazing results.

i always tend to mix and match high and low end pieces together. the suit of course, is an investment piece, while the tie was only 50 cents from a local thrift store and the tie pin (below) was picked up while traveling in new york, was $3.
many will say my selected lining of my jacket is hot pink. its not. its fuchsia. even if the lining were hot pink, id wear it anyway. im not afraid of color in the least bit. just not overkill.

i combined my striped shirt with a plaid tie, while keeping every other element solid. sometimes focusing pattern in one area gives visual rest to the passerby, but quickly gives them clearance to check out the details of its context.
small attention to details, lets you know someone has carefully considered their selections. this type behavior sets a company like astor and black above the rest.
i am a thriter. yes. but i am also a lover of custom clothing from great companies such as astor and black. an investment piece whether a gentleman or a woman will give your closet that added credibility. please take a moment to visit astor and black on their facebook page

id love to hear what you think.

[a few changes around the condo]

on yesterday creative loafing charlotte came by the condo to do an interview with me regarding my home and my position on home design. i am so thankful to michelle of the fashion blog called the pinque blog who forwarded them my information.

i received the email while in new york a few weeks ago in the car traveling to the hotel. i like to give honor where honor is due (church talk). in my confusing state on twitter she kindly tweeted it was her. without pretense or without requiring a check, she saw fit to tell someone about me. now thats what you call blog love. its alright to say amen right here. amen.

now michelle and i instantly connected via twitter because we both have yorkshire terriers that look so much alike, both near charlotte and we both graduated from winthrop university. you will have to tweet her and follow her blog to see more of her amazing fashion and her lil guy.
since they were coming over, it was a perfect time to move things around a bit. remember those $5 frames and paper i told you about 2 days ago? well u can see they found a home above my sofa. i think the simple matted scrapbook paper adds so much life to my neutral palette. i intentionally choose a neutral base for this reason.

the great thing about this gallery wall, is that for less than the price of a happy meal, i can totally change the colors and  mood of my space.

i will return some time next week with the new layout of the living room.

what color would you choose if you had a few frames laying around?

dont forget to vote for my Prep Style #2 here on this facebook page. every vote helps and every vote counts. if you do vote for me please tweet me or leave me a facebook message letting me know you choose Prep Style #2.

[$5 frames and $.44 paper...]

my sources tell me i am supposed to have my lil pad interviewed for an upcoming local publication very soon. so that means i need to clean up the headquarters and get organized.

i have made some "minor" changes to my space.
one of those changes include [$5 frames from wal-mart...]
and [$.44 scrapbook paper from hobby lobby].
again not a HUGE change...but worthy enough for me to tell you.

can you guess what these two things will produce?

[mixology monday: vintage briefcase]

two weeks ago i went to see ryan leslie while i was in new york. it was a really good show, but i was tired and didn't have the new york energy to stay until the end.
this is what i wore to the concert. minus the [vintage briefcase], which i bought from goodwill about 2 years ago. i never did get it treated so the leather has rainspots on it. eh...i dont even mind. as you can see, i paired the leather case with some vintage shoes found on ebay a couple of years ago as well.
these single monk strapped shoes has been one of my best purchases to-date regarding shoes. i think quality shoes are important to any man's wardrobe. one of the biggest travesties, in my opinion, is to have a complete look and the shoes are improper. yes. shoes matter.
as you can see here i am not wearing a bowtie. matter-of-fact i don't own a navy and polka dot bow. that is on my list of things to buy.
sock...no. its the summer time and you can get away with not wearing socks as long as your pants are somewhat fitted. it doesn't hurt to cuff them either. oh and yea the feet thing...well yea take care of that as well.

[i have been pondering...]

...what to do with this last iconic sample piece of schumacher chiang mai dragon in alabaster.
huh? say what? yea i blogged about it here and here and did a giveaway here.
there are so many options and as a designer the first thing that came to mind was a pillow. one or two very graphic pillows can have the greatest impact in a room. this fabric made into a pillow will certainly achieve just that.
btw the way aren't these images just beautiful? well they are from the etsy shop called woodyliana. as a matter-of-fact back in february i won an imperial trellis grey pillow from them.
the craftsmanship of their pillows is stunning. the attention to detail in every stitch in uncanny if you have a little extra money to spend in a room, a high quality pillow such as these pillow by woodyliana is the way to go.

notwithstanding the huge impact it would have in my space, a chiang mai pillow is just not something i need right now. so, the logical thing for me, would be to turn it into a bowtie.
you know how much i love my bowties right?
since the fabric is only a sample size, there aren't many options outside of maybe recovering a cushion, pillow or a small stool. so for me the BEST answer is a bowtie.

i think there is just enough to make it work. if not i can always add one of these 100% linen pieces of fabric to give it a contrasting effect like this bowtie.
of course i began to think of pieces i already had in my wardrobe and these plumb colored pants  i wore on a segment of the nate berkus show back in may, is a viable option.
or perhaps if i cut the fabric on the other end, i can bring out more of the mustard and green and wear them with my green pants. which i bought at goodwill some time ago for around $4 and which you will see in the field piece on my next appearance on the nate berkus show.

i emailed a bowtie maker, whose work i am a fan of and hopefully they will respond to my email and make me a happy camper.

i will keep you in formed, but what do you think?
