i must admit that a very good tutorial takes a lot of patience and when i am in the zone...i am in the zone. unfortunately i dont have anyone hanging over my shoulders to take pictures during the process.
but i will do my best to explain.
i used:-textile medium
-acrylic paint
-water
-foam brush
-foam roller
-sand paper (or square)
spray bottle
i did this:
i read the instructions on the back of the textile medium bottle. then i dumped it into a cup, along with the paint and added water until the concoction was thin and starting painting.
i painted on the first layer with a foam brush and then used a foam roller.
i used water to dilute the paint just to keep it thin as possible.
i used water to dilute the paint just to keep it thin as possible.
the foam brush and the foam roller seem to eliminate the appearance of brush strokes.
i used fleece from the local fabric store for the detailing.here are some questions you have asked and my answers..
Q: does the type of fabric matter.
A: quite possibly. the fabric is a variable and can most definitely alter the look and perhaps feel of the
finish. i can't make a definitive statement, because i only painted my chairs.
Q: does the paint get on your clothes.
A: not at all. the textile medium is a permanent bonding solution that when mixed with paint will become permanent to textile or fabric (of course anything is possible. remember the story of the titanic?)
Q: does the paint crack when you sit on it?
A: nope.
i don't know if they will last 3 months, 3 years, or 300 years. but i will be sure to update you as time pushes on.
this is how both chairs look in my home. it takes some time to complete a chair. so don't rush. take your time.
if you missed the actually chairs click here or here or here...lol
it only cost me less than $10 to redo both chairs.
$10 versus a $1,000 and up for both chairs. i will take $10 alex.
i really need more clients to test out more colors...lol.
okay NOW who is ready to paint a chair?

BRILLIANT! Thanks for sharing - and was so happy to see the paint didn't crack.
Have a pretty day!

I'm so going to do this!!! you are an inspiration!!...
love how the chairs look in your home in that last photo..simply gorgeous!!..
best,
maureen
They look fabulous and chic Rashon, I painted my leather ottoman a few months ago, but haven't tried fabric yet...but I'm sure I'll get around to trying that too lol. The addition of the plaid and those pillows are to die for.
I have been checking your blog all day waiting for this!! Can't wait to tackle my chairs! How long did it take to dry enough to sit on? Where did you find the fabric medium? I can't find it at Michaels or Joann's. Thanks!!
Sorry to pester you... but, did you use acrylic paint or latex enamel (like in the pic?)
Fabulous Rashon! Wow, I am in awe! I read a ton of design blogs and this is probably one of the most original and clever ideas I've seen yet.
Alex
ps - Love you on Nate!
Addict: Drying time for each layer was actually kind of short. You can always speed of the process by putting them outside (if the weather is nice) or using a small hairdryer and going over the painted area.
I used the acrylic latex enamel that you see in the picture.
But how does it feel? They look so great with your styling. Love what you did to them. They look totally classic.
So clever! They are fabulous!
How does it feel?
Just like vinyl and leather combined.
You always WOW me. Your fan, Terry
Fabulous!! these are beautiful. I've also painted on upholstered pieces and fabrics and they hold up beautifully! Like I tell everyone who asks...you know how when you get paint on your clothes and it doesn't come out?Yep...same deal! LOL
That is so much cheaper than reupholstery...I think I will be painting a lot of chairs black to put in my booth!
I've been very curious about this technique. I like how it covered the stripes and you couldn't see thru the paint.
I like the addition of the suspender to the plaid fleece. Nice touch!!
Rashon--These are amazingly gorgeous!! Love the plaid detailing--you are a genius. Can't wait to see what you do next...
they look so great! i bet the fact that this fabric is already shiny and smooth helps a lot with the process. i remember on young house love, when they painted some fabric, and it was more porous, and didn' tlook as natural as your's....anyway...great work!!
This is great! Very inspirational yet accessible. Thank you for trying this and sharing!
Thanks, I have been stalking your blog waiting for this. I am going to have to share this post with all my online communities.
Will totally have to give this a try one day
Not to be dense, but what is in the spray bottle and when is it used?
sglassme: It isnt dense. the bottle has fabric softner and water in it. i use it randomly to keep the paint wet.
What a handsome pair and they look so much like leather! Leave it to you to make a way out of "no way" (which is exactly what I said when I learned you painted these chairs!!!)
This is fantastic. I posted about your paint job today... so inspiring!
Oh My Wow. I'll definitely be sharing this with our readers. That looks fantastic!

WOW THIS IS A GREAT IDEA!! I MUST ASK HOW MANY COATS DID YOU HAVE TO APPLY BEFORE YOU GOT YOUR FINISHED LOOK?
I have a chair who can benefit from this. Considering!
Just unbelievable. Can you say revolution???
Amazing! I've been reading up on this because I have two wingbacks that need a color-change. They're finished in a velvet-like material. Think it'll work?
Wowee! Amazing! Just found this blog. Love it!
This is a truly incredible DIY makeover. I can't believe how good those chairs look! I've always been afraid to try "painting" fabric and upholstery because I've heard some horror stories, but this post gives me hope! Thanks for it.
Came over from "Better After"...a-friggin'-mazing chairs! That's very ingenious. I'm so impressed! xo
Holy cow! I've seen painted upholstered chairs before but these are simply stunning. I'm so impressed!
Now I'm eyeballing my old, tired out chair that has never fit in here and contemplating the possibilities.
Oh my goodness...AWSOME...totally doing this for my Mom's chairs...will save her so much money! Thank you so much for posting this!
HOLY PAINTED FABRIC! I think you just solved my old, ugly, dingy cushion problem on my dining room chairs! I have nothing to lose by trying this on them. Awesome, just awesome!
I wish I had known about being able to paint fabric on chairs like this a month ago. I had a wingback chair and re-holstered it and even though I was able to find the fabric at a resonable price on ebay it still cost more than painting. The painted chair look beautiful. I will definately try that on my next project which will probably be a sofa.
First let me say that I'm so happy to have found you referenced on one of my other favorite blogs. I don't know why I hadn't thought to look for it before. I was so impressed by your talent and wonderful personality when I first saw you on the Nate Berkus show. Secondly if you haven't already, you truly need to think of compiling a book! And lastly...the painted Tom Ford inspired chairs are amazing! I'm thinking I may do something like this for my ex-hubby. That would look great at his place and he would love the masculine touches!
