[i have been pondering...]

...what to do with this last iconic sample piece of schumacher chiang mai dragon in alabaster.
huh? say what? yea i blogged about it here and here and did a giveaway here.
there are so many options and as a designer the first thing that came to mind was a pillow. one or two very graphic pillows can have the greatest impact in a room. this fabric made into a pillow will certainly achieve just that.
btw the way aren't these images just beautiful? well they are from the etsy shop called woodyliana. as a matter-of-fact back in february i won an imperial trellis grey pillow from them.
the craftsmanship of their pillows is stunning. the attention to detail in every stitch in uncanny if you have a little extra money to spend in a room, a high quality pillow such as these pillow by woodyliana is the way to go.

notwithstanding the huge impact it would have in my space, a chiang mai pillow is just not something i need right now. so, the logical thing for me, would be to turn it into a bowtie.
you know how much i love my bowties right?
since the fabric is only a sample size, there aren't many options outside of maybe recovering a cushion, pillow or a small stool. so for me the BEST answer is a bowtie.

i think there is just enough to make it work. if not i can always add one of these 100% linen pieces of fabric to give it a contrasting effect like this bowtie.
of course i began to think of pieces i already had in my wardrobe and these plumb colored pants  i wore on a segment of the nate berkus show back in may, is a viable option.
or perhaps if i cut the fabric on the other end, i can bring out more of the mustard and green and wear them with my green pants. which i bought at goodwill some time ago for around $4 and which you will see in the field piece on my next appearance on the nate berkus show.

i emailed a bowtie maker, whose work i am a fan of and hopefully they will respond to my email and make me a happy camper.

i will keep you in formed, but what do you think?

I'm tempted to pull out the card for some of those gorgeous pillows and I think the fabric will make a beautiful bow tie.

Yes a bow tie! Or how about a vest? The pattern of the fabric would lend itself to make a fantastic vest!

A bow tie would be sooo personal! Awesome idea. Or frame the piece as art for now and make a tie of it later.

Everyone else seems to think it would make a fabulous bowtie. But I'm wondering if the fabric would be shown off to advantge in such a mall project. The fabric is intricate, it has a big, bold desgin and many colors. You couldn't see all these things in a bowtie, I don't think. I am wrong about a lot of things, so I may be completely off the mark here.
I might frame it with a mat or two or three. I'd take it to a professional 'cause I don't how to do the stretching and all. But I'm anxious to know what you decide.

Joyce,

You may be on to something. I will admit, that taking it to a bowtie level does decrease the whole wow factor...a bit. I hope to be able to capture at least some of the saturated colors in it, in a small dose.

This is a first for me and probably Chiang Mai. So if it works...we can celebrate! If it doesn't then, I ruined a great piece of fabric. The agony of decision making!!

Love the idea! Who knows, you just might be on to something...bowties to match your home decor!

Just a thought~~~ to show off that gorgeous pattern. A cylinder style lampshade, or an over-sised pincushion filled with sand and wrapped with silk threads. Keep it by your pinterest offerings.

Is there any way you could try folding it to see if you could use it as a tie? Or find another piece of fabric that has a similar size print to try as a bow tie before you cut this fabric? I think the print is just too big for a tie, in my opinion. Now a vest would be smashing!

Vest... is the best! Way to go that is....You still enjoy wearing it and keep more of the design on display!

Well, you cannot go wrong with that fabric and you will have a unique bowtie. Make it work!

I've been contemplating ordering a Hot House Flowers pillow cover from woodyliana for some time now...but I might have to keep waiting and really wait for the right moment to treat myself (wait, that's now!). Who might that bow-tie maker be??? One maker in particular stands out as he has some great style like you...at least I think he still makes bow-ties.

I swear I saw this fabric used by Sarah Richardson in Design Inc/Sarah 101 about the loft space. You didn't mention the size of the piece, so what about a tuxedo cummerbund?

Not a bow tie, please. The pattern won't show to its advantage. It's so gorgeous, I'd mat and frame it.

Nutbird said...

No. One of my friends makes bow ties all the time for her son. the fabric is too stiff to tie properly. Also the scale is wrong. You wouldn't get to see the design at all and you would just see blobs of color. To try this out, color copy the fabric, then cut out a piece in the shape of the tied bow. Hold it up to your neck in front of a mirror. It would be too contrived. To match your pants try a madras or a paisley like in pocket squares. Ann

I definitely agree with others...make a vest out of it, and you could make a bowtie to match one of the popping colors.

Eak out two bowties with the fabric with the linen back.

So glad to have found your site. And thanks!

I am gonna have to side with Nutbird on this one, Mr. GWH. I love this fabric and have pillows and a great tote bag out of it. But maybe try the vest or the cummerbund instead. Good luck!

I think that is seriously perfect for you. Fashion + Design fabulousness. Go for it!

Iris said...

Might not be enough fabric in a sample size for a vest, and does anyone really need another framed piece of fabric? I would go to Etsy and ask someone's advice first on whether the fabric would work for your tie. Another option is having the design duplicated & made into a larger bolt of fabric?

The plot thickens - which shall Rashon choose? haha Good Luck!

I personally think the scale of the print is too big to be used to its full potential on a bowtie...but I know you'll find something fabulous to make it into. OR, you can always send it to me and I'll put it to good use...just a thought! :)

Wow. What a fabulous fabric! I do love the idea of a bow tie. You should have a few made and sell a few on your awesome blog! I just found you and am a new follower!

I'm so excited to see this reveal. What a chic use of the fabric. And so you! I love it, can't wait. Feel free to include a link to my chairs (of course!) Now you're making me wish I'd saved some of my fabric and made a fabulous folding makeup case or something.
