[new york to do list...]

i have traveled to new york for the nate berkus show three times this year. today will make my fourth visit. it is certainly a great opportunity to be supported by someone that so many love...including oprah.

normally, when i arrive in new york, i go to my hotel, walk around upper west side, eat, return to my hotel and sleep. its quite embarrassing to be in one of the most iconic cities in the world and fail to take full advantage of the many sights and sounds. okay the last time i was in new york i did meet two college friends and we had dinner in time square. it wasn't as exciting as they show in the movies though.

this time i made a combined list of things i want to do and places i want to visit.

the brooklyn circus is one of my favorite online shops and i have wanted to visit them for the longest.
ryan leslie, a harvard university graduate is by far one of the most underrated r&b artist on the planet. so i am excited to hear him live in nyc.
the metropolitan museum of art is quite iconic. i would like to do a tour, but im not sure of my entire schedule...so it will fit it where it can get it.
i would like to see a broadway play...unfortunately many of the decent priced tickets seem to be sold out. and since im not wealthy or rich...well ya know...

okay these are the only 4 i have...right now
lame i know, but since i am traveling alone i am rarely motivated to go out.

do you have any good recommendations for good nyc spots?

You should absolutely take advantage each time you come visit, Rashon! I believe it is Wednesdays that you can get less expensive tickets to Broadway shows for daytime performances. I hope the weather doesn't turn humid again for your visit; so far, so good this week!

You definitely need to take in a Broadway show. Hit up the TKTS booth in Times Square and you can sometimes get tickets half-price.

Congrats on show #4!! Don't feel bad..I lived in NYC for almost 2 years and wished I had seen more LOL! I always heard The Blue Note is a fun place. My husband and I spent alot of time on the Lower East Side and MacDougal Street is another place to visit. Dangerfield's comedy club is fun. I am sure Nate could give you lots of suggestion ;) Have fun and definitely go see a Broadway show.

If you are looking for an AMAZING burger you have to go to Shake Shack. You mentioned the Upper West Side and there is one at Columbus and 77th. If there is a wait, trust me, it's worth it!

Can't wait to see what you are up to on the Nate Show! NYC is my favourite place on earth. If you are looking for some good eats, you should check out Gossip on 9th Ave. between 49th & 50th. Their roasted beet salad is to die for. Have a wonderful trip!

Have great trip! (And, tell Nate to send you to the best show on Broadway--I think you deserve it!)

check the last minute tickets booth in times square for cheap(er) tickets. you MUST post about brooklyn circus & take LOTS of photos--i love that place!

and the MOMA is ridiculous. you need hours to do the whole thing, but fit it in if you can.

travel safe & we'll talk soon!

Sometimes the day of the show you can go to the ticket booth and by a ticket that someone didn't show up for or you can go to the ticket booth 2 for 1 in Time Square. The Lion King is fantastic! Try not to miss it! Have fun!

love your list of must do's in NYC! for me whenever i go back "home" i have to visit "Irving 71 Place" its the best little coffee house and the place i discovered my favorite artist nora jones whenever i hear her music i imagine myself sitting in there on a cold sunday morning drinking coffee - as far as thrift shoppes my weekly visits went to "The Opera Thrift Shop" (mostly becasue i had to walk by it everyday in my commute to work) but still - its fantastic! its located 222 East 23rd St. enjoy your trip!

these are some great suggestions. ive got to see how much work i will be doing but it seems as if times square is the place to buy a tix.

i do wanna see a broadway play.

i agree with all the others with buying tickets same day - there's a booth in times square where you can purchase them (i think someone above mentioned the name of it...)

a few years ago i saw Aida on broadway (with Deborah Cox, fellow Canadian!, playing Aida)....It was amazing and everything you hear a broadway show is. I literally cried (it was a romantic story!). i've also seen the lion king (but in toronto) and it was, of course, amazing as well.

good luck!

Hope you have a great trip Rashon! You are going to have to break it down as to what you want to do and see... The Met would probably be at the top of my list... then I'd go to the little Italy area and have something to eat and go into a deli....ahhh, the aroma is awesome! China town, the jewelry district, the fashion district...take a trip on the ferry to NJ and pass by the Statue of Liberty. So many things to do! Whenever I'm going to visit a new place I start off by going to tripadvisor.com and see what other say. It's so helpful!

congratulations on the recognition! I would recommend going to the TKTS spot in times sq for last-minute broadway tickets but you won't have the time to stand in line probably (ask a friend?). The Met - hope you make it there.

Hey, Congratulations! I'm a blog lurker. I love your blog but usually don't have much to say. I'm trying to transform my place but I'm a graduate student with NO money--enough said. But I finally can contribute to your NYC trip!!! FYI, check your Brooklyn Circus link--it should include "the." We end up going to a rather entertaining family blog rather than the store. :) As for NYC, since you are a designer you should definitely go to MOOD and the garment district (might find cool fabric). I love that store. Another (possible designer interest)to check out is the New York Housing works thrift store in Chelsea (love it)! And take advantage of some non-designer things (but on my go to list when I used to live there) Central Park! Strand Book Store. Century 21 (shopping galore). Also, I'm a former brooklynite, check out Fort Greene! There used to be lots of accessory decorating stores there! I hope my list is useful. I tried to tailor to what I think you might like based on reading your blog. Let me know if you need more suggestions. Peace.

As has been said by others, go to the TKTS booth to get discount day of tickets to shows. If you manage it, go to the booth down by Battery Park (at the bottom of Manhattan)the lines are MUCH shorter than the Times Square booth. AND while you're down there you can go to Century 21 a fab location for heavily discounted designer wares.

How about the Brooklyn Flea? I will def go on my next trip. I'm sure you can find some great things there.

Have fun!! Can't wait for the new episode! Re: what to do in NYC...I love just sipping a coffee in Central Park or visiting thrift + vintage stores in the Village! Have you been down there yet??

Traveling alone is the only kind of traveling I do! My curiosity and the money I spent getting there gets me out the door! lol

Last time I was in NYC was 1997 to see Johnny Mathis at Carnegie Hall. Hotel prices were insane then, can imagine what they are 14 yrs later. I think I paid $150/night for a little place, the Monarch? on 55th street, walking distance from Carnegie. I could only afford to stay one night but I loved walking up past Columbus Circle to the Lincoln Center. Even the pigeons cross at the crosswalk w/the pedestrians! So funny. Saw Trump Tower, did not walk to Times Sq. & should have. Did not take a subway not even from LaGuardia; my hotel had a shuttle.

The Twin Towers were still standing. NEXT time I visit I will pay that site a visit & pay my respects. I still think they are trying to rebuild on top of a gravesite and they should have just made it a quiet reflective greenspace with lots of trees and benches like we did here in OKC for our terrorist attack - but the almighty dollar talks...

Anyway my advice just go out the door & walk you'll find something interesting! And I went in September or October so it wasn't hot at all. Maybe NYC gets less impressive the more you visit it but I found it amazing in the short time I was there.

Ask the producers that you are dealing with to get you a ticket. I am sure that they have SONY corporate tickets they can get. Or, just go to the box office right before the curtain. If you are on the upper west side, go to the John Lennon memorial - Strawberry Fields? - right inside Central Park and about 80th. You MUST drop in the Museum of Natural History, if just for half an hour. Things to see there: the Dinosaur Hall and the full sized hanging whale. My son's favorite thing there was the Dodo bird, which is now extinct. The Metropolitan Museum might be free on Tuesday nights. Buy a New York Magazine, everything is listed for the week. You can only see part of the Met in every visit. I think the Alexander McQueen exhibit is there now, ask the producers to help you get a special ticket for that. If not, try the Temple of Dendur. We would like to see you use the Whale and the Temple of Dendur as inspirations for rooms.
My favorite restaurant is Mary's fish Camp near Charles and Perry. In the West Village. It opens right at 6 pm. The best lobster roll in the world. Also, lots of fish. You would like the West Village. Small, quaint, hip, with lots of little shops. The best lamp and accessory shop in the world is Leo Designs right near the Magnolia Bakery. All their lamps are solid, masculine, with dark shades. Worth a visit. Wish I was there to show you around. Did you know that there is a restaurant on 8th or so that just has Rice Pudding? about 30 or 50 kinds. It is called Rice something. Have fun. Ask some of the Production Assistants, or Asst Producers to hang out. They probably think you have lots of plans. Ann

I lived in NYC for 12 years, and after 2 years away just visited. I recommend walking the High Line, the elevated park on the west side of Manhattan. Go to ABC Carpet and Home, just north of Union Square, to see fabulous furniture. If you're there on the weekend, check out Brooklyn Flea. Have fun!

The Brooklyn Flea, of course! It's so much more than you can imagine.....and the Brooklyn Museum and Noguchi Museum. Don't forget to stroll down Greene Street in Soho; stop in at Murray Moss and the Taschen Book store. Not cheap, but these are things that train your eye to intelligent fineness and glorious beauty. And they are just a breath of fresh air.
