[TIP# 1 for a budget makeover]

it is really exciting to know so many of you are inspired to visit your local eco-friendly stores (thrift stores) and are finding amazing treasures.

although i create budget inspired spaces, the truth, there is a careful mix of both new and old pieces in a room. i admit it can be a challenge to create a room totally filled with eco-friendly and second hand pieces (tho i do it often), but if you are willing to wait and curate over time, you can achieve a great space. rome wasn't built in a day...eh?

what you see on tv is an ACTUAL makeover.

please be aware that designing these spaces for tv is a HANDS ON job for me. it is much more than just painting and flopping pillows around. there is a legal and safety component as well.

so a BIG thank you to Nate's entire team who help me in every way.

over the course of the blog i will drop tips on how to achieve a budget makeover.
every item you see in a second hand store has the potential to be something amazing. if you remember i blogged here about the above chairs. i can promise you, if a boutique shop owner had seen these chairs before i did, they would have quickly picked them up and placed them in a client's home with a much higher price tag. i'm not mad at that. had these chairs not been for this client i would have bought them and shipped them back to rock hill...STAT!

so don't think because it is in a thrift store it doesn't have value. yes it does. some of you may think it's beneath you to step foot in a second hand store. trust me, some of the most sought after designers bop into the same places you drive past. well...there assistant anyway.

I tell my friends all if the time, "don't sleep on craigslist/restore/salvation army/goodwill" but it can be a hard sell until you show them an amazing find. These stores are like treasure chests hiding in plain sight. Great job on the makeover (again). Her reaction, I'm sure, made your work all that much more rewarding. Side note: are you a preacher/minister? I know that's random but your diction and delivery have a cadence that reminds me a southern sermon.

And I thought you did it all by yourself:):) You/they did a wonderful job. I agree with all of your points. Just because it is second hand....well you know the rest!

LOVING your segments on Nate! I couldn't agree more, I think sometimes it's hard for people to see past all the clutter in those stores. BUT, their seems to be a thrifting revolution going on. Unfortunately it means the prices are going up in these shops (at least where I live).

Gretchen, there are makeovers I complete BY MYSELF.

TV makeovers are totally different and require more than just designing and labor. There is a extensive egal scope to many of the projects.

It is possible to do it alone.
I do it all the time.

Rashon, I have always seen the potential in things, furniture...even my boyfriend was my biggest DIY. He turned out lovely ;)
Sometimes it´s dificult to convince friends and family of the potential things can have and they give you bad opinions, untill you transform it and they al start to think ...ooo i like it, and they want to have it.

I just saw the new video´s of you on the Nate show, It was lovely to see you hunting the stores, haha that´s exactly what i do too!
You were born to be on the television, I hope to see many many more shows of YOU!

Hi Rashon,
I just started reading your blog. You do such great work. I've been shopping thrift/GW/Craigslist for a long time. The thrill of finding things so cheap is addictive isn't it?
I see rehab in my future.
Have a great day!

Rachon, I would have bought these chairs in a heartbeat. They are simply fabulous. I loved your segment on Nate and that room with these chairs.

As a decorator, I switch out my things frequently and often take very good items to Goodwill, including Designer mistakes....I love that people find treasures in my stuff as I find treasures in theirs.

Hi Rashon,

I am Latoya from thescottscrib and I am so impressed by what you did with these chairs. I am a thrift store enthusiast myself after growing up with a Grandmother who frequented thrift stores across our area almost every day. I love that I can honor her memory through doing the same. I can't wait to see your future projects because I love what I am seeing so far. Such an inspiration...and from the SC area too...so glad to have a creative native near by:) Have A Happy Thursday and be blessed!

i love everything you have said in this posts. The quote "one man's trash is another man's treasure" is my daily mantra. There's so much potential in thrift stores some people just need creativity and vision to guide them the right way.

My neighbors think I'm a lunatic because I spend most of the summer in my garage painting and repainting things I already own or picked up at resale or thrift stores. Let them think what they will, but I'd much rather have a one-of-a-kind piece in my home than a house full of the same thing you can get at any furniture store.

Keep the tips coming-and if you are so inclined, I'd love it if one of those tips included the type of gold paint you used in the coffee table makeover from Tuesday's appearance. (This is me begging.)

I've been hunting down treasures in thrift stores for years and LOVE a good treasure. My entire home is filled with these treasures that I've redone, repurposed and renewed! So glad to see someone else out there encouraging others to think outside the box and make their home beautiful!

You're so right Rashon! My neighbors are always shocked that I even shop Craigslist or Goodwill. I guess they'd rather pay full price for things.

What a great web log. I spend hours on the net reading blogs, about tons of various subjects. I have to first of all give praise to whoever created your theme and second of all to you for writing what i can only describe as an fabulous article. I honestly believe there is a skill to writing articles that only very few posses and honestly you got it. The combining of demonstrative and upper-class content is by all odds super rare with the astronomic amount of blogs on the cyberspace.

You have been so much fun to watch on Nate. Isn't finding the "perfect" piece all about seeing what it can be and not what it is?! I'm excited to watch as things take off for you! Y

Rashon, I wanted to tell you that your latest appearance was beyond fantastic. It was your best yet in my opinion. You are a natural in front of the camera (loved the bit on hand sanitizer, lol). And the makeover was AH-MAZING. The lamps, the table, the pink inside the sideboard OH my. And do you know what my favorite part is? Now that I've seen you on Nate 3 times, I feel like I can hear your voice when I read your blog! Love it!! hugs,
Nancy xo

Hi Rashon,

I really really enjoy seeing you when you are on TV and knowing how thoroughly excited you are with your decorating and thrift store discoveries. My local Salvation Army store is AMAZING and I hit it several times a week. I have collected handmade Persian carpets since we lived in Iran nearly 40 years ago and for a few months my SA store seemed to have a run on brand new handmade carpets and I lucked onto three at different times with the most expensive being an 8 X 11, handmade (I KNOW my carpets) pure wool for $208. At that price I didn't even wait for the 15% off on senior day because I knew it wouldn't be there. Got a beautiful handmade pure wool with a small amount of silk in it for $90, about 5 x 8 and I was able to retire the very old one in that spot that I bought in Iran many years ago. Fortunately, they ran out of the handmade ones about the time I ran out of floor space. On a recent visit with my husband and we waited for them to open to discover they had put out a brand new red and white, and large, electric scooter for a steal. My only regret is that I have finite space in my house for all the treasures in that store just begging to come home with me.
