[a piece of paper doesn't need...]

batteries. in an age of crackberries, crappy iPhones and lapPads, i tend to forget the rudimentary benefit of a simple piece of paper; it never needs recharging.
as a guy who has lived in south carolina all his life, but certainly has seen many states near and far, i'm not used to a public transit system. i drive. i like driving. i hate driving. so to be in ny having to navigate the subway as a tourist is frustrating.

around 11pmish on sunday my phone completely died. i was unable to pull up directions or even the subway map. needless to say i turned a 30 minute ride to brooklyn into a 4 hour long test of patience.

Oh no! I've actually had the same thing happen before in NYC and realized when it was far too late that I missed my stop many many stops ago!

yikes! at least it made for a good blog post? :)

i've been in delhi, india for just over a month now and ALWAYS have a good ol' fashioned paper map in my bag. helps me get myself oriented, find locations i'm not familiar with...and to make sure auto rickshaws are going in the right direction (and not taking me on the *ahem* extended route if you know what i mean!)

OH MY GOSH! That sounds awful! I am the absolute WORST with directions! Dont know what I would do without gps!!! And I still manage to get lost even with that! Hope it didnt put a damper on your trip :)

That stinks, but so true! And the map has beautiful "framable" graphics to boot. Hope you had a good time once you finally got to your destination!

Ugh, i have no sense of direction and have, sadly, become completely dependent upon my phone to help get me where I need to go. It's sad. Maps are so easy and reliable, we need to remember their usefulness and value.

I've always said, technology is great when it works, but when it doesn't...I'm glad I'm old school enough to know how to read that paper!! LOL

Sorry to hear about your subway adventure. I'm sure you were flustered but made out ok.
Prior to my living in NYC I lived by that paper subway system map. I still use Grand Central as my base to keep my wits about myself. I love the Subway and Metro North!

Thanks for stopping by. I appreciate the visit and your gracious comments. You ask about the frames at the reception. They are just a variety that they found at GW and various garage sales and then hung them from the ceiling. I loved the idea. Hugs, Marty
